Fidelity Bank Creative Writing W/Shop & Literary Competition

Call For Entries:

The 3rd edition of Fidelity Bank’s International Creative Writing Workshop will be hosted by multiple award-winning novelist, Helon Habila, in Abuja from Friday July 16 – Thursday July 22, 2010. Habila will be supported by Canada’s Madeleine Thien, a prize winning novelist whose book, Certainty, has been translated into 16 languages worldwide and Jamaican-born Colin Channer, author of the critically acclaimed Waiting in Vain, and Fiction Fellow, Wellesley College Boston, Massachusetts.

Your email should bear the title – Workshop Application.

The body of the email should contain the following:

  1. your name
  2. your address
  3. a few sentences about yourself (not more than 50 words)
  4. a writing sample of between 200 – 800 words

Please, include whether your entry is fiction or non-fiction.

Acceptance will be based on the quality of the entry. The entry must be pasted or written in the body of the email. DO NOT SEND ANY ATTACHMENTS. Applications with attachment will be automatically disqualified.

Deadline for submission is June 20, 2010. If accepted, you will be notified by July 4, 2010.

Living earth Nigeria Foundation (LENF) and Living Earth Foundation (LEF) UK in partnership with the Academic Associates Peace Works (AAPW) and Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (IHRHL) are currently implementing a DFID funded project in 6 LGAs, two each from Rivers, Bayelsa and Dealta States. The project is funded under the Governance and Transperance Fund (GTF) programme of DFID.

The project aims at strengthening the effectiveness of the LGAs in delivering basic services to the citizens and improving their communications while at the same time bulding the capacity of civil society groups within the LGAs to engage with their governance and influence policy. A key component of the project is awareness of good governance which is to be achieved by identifying and showcasing traditional values which promote good governance. These values are to be created and promoted through radio programmes, cultural festivals, and literary competitions.

The competition aims at reinforcing the objectives of GTF project in the Niger Delta and beyond, enabling a wider spread of the message of good governance in Nigeria, promoting participation of the people in ensuring good governace at the local, state and national levels and stimulating public debate on the link between sustainable development and good governance.

Theme of the Competition:

While there is no specific topic prescribed for the competition, all entries must address the broad theme of ‘Our Delta, Our Values, Our Governance’

Format of Entries:

  • Short plays (not more than 2,500 words)
  • Short stories (not more than 2,500 words)
  • Poems (max of 3 stanzas of not more than 10 lines each)
  • Essays (not more than 2,500 words)

Each submission shall be typewritten in Arial-11 font size and double spaced with 0.5 margin on both sides of A4 paper. The submission must be accompanied with the name, phone number, and address of the candidate boldly written on top. A participant is entitled to one submission only, as multiple entries by one participant will lead to disqualification.

Eligibility for Participants:

The competition is open to all Nigerians. There is no age limit.

Deadline and Mode of Submission:

Submission of entries closes 22nd June 2010. Entries received after this time shall not be considered.
